COVER REVEAL: New D. E. Stevenson titles coming January 2022 from Dean Street Press

As those of you who have been paying attention will know, I've already announced (see here if you haven't been paying attention) that come January 2022 there will be eleven new Furrowed Middlebrow/Dean Street Press editions of D. E. Stevenson titles, many of them among her hardest-to-find and most-loved books. I said at that time that we hoped to use many of the original covers for our editions, and now it's time to show you what we've come up with. (Those of you on Twitter may already have seen these previewed there but this is the first time they've all been shown together.)

Are you ready? Brace yourselves!

All but one have original covers (though in a couple of cases we went with U.S. first edition covers rather than U.K. firsts). As a reminder, our editions of The English Air, Five Windows, The Tall Stranger, Anna and Her Daughters, and The Blue Sapphire will be paperback-only, as e-book editions for those are already available from another publisher. We will release the remaining titles in both paperback and e-book, as per our norm.

Big thanks, as so often before, to Jerri Chase for providing scans of the covers of her copies of Green Money and Five Windows!

And, last but certainly not least, we have the one title that couldn't make use of an original vintage cover image, for the simply reason that it wasn't ever published until the lovely Greyladies Books did it a few years back. I had excellent good luck with The Fair Miss Fortune, as I'd only just begun looking for possible cover images when I came across a vintage advertising image that, in my opinion, perfectly captures the frolicsome tone of the book and subtly suggests its theme and the cause of all the rollicking confusion in the plot.

I hope you're well pleased with these. We'll also have some news about exciting bonus materials to be included in these new editions. Coming soon!

  1. These are absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to read them all! I loved the three Dering family books - couldn't pick a favorite if you paid me (although Winter and Rough Weather has my favorite cover).

  3. Oh Scott, the Fair Miss Fortune cover is perfect. I may just have to indulge in another copy.

Of course, they are all perfect. You are, as I've said, a saint.

    1. I agree with Susan, of course. Most of the base images are ones I know, and what a good job brightening up the Green Money image. And the cover art you found for The Fair Miss Fortune is WONDERFUL.

  4. Yes.well pleased! When its hard to choose where to begin the only way to go is with the cover = and these are all very tempting. I'm going for Five Windows and Anna and her Daughters as they both look like Wales though of course I know they are Scotland.

  5. These are lovely. I'm looking forward to them, especially Young Mrs Savage, which I read, enjoyed and then sold on. I want it back!

  6. I can't wait either. I do have a fair number of her paperbacks but the font is far too tiny for me now and arthritic hands don't allow juggling a magnifying glass and a book at the same time.

Delightful range of covers. Thank you again Scott

  8. I almost regret already owning these ones. I love Furrowed Middlebrow editions.

On another topic, I have recently read 'A Festival for Gilbert' (a very lucky AbeBooks find) and 'Pung of Dragons' (a resigned expenditure of lots of money) by Susan Pleydell. They were really, really good. Both are concerned with music and theatre performance. These ones are quite reminiscent of the more adult Elfrida Vipont and Kitty Barne books, but ensemble casts rather than mainly focused on a single main character. Lovely turns of phrase and sensitive depictions of emotional states, inner thoughts, and extended families.
Also loads of smoking and sherry drinking as you would expect from Susan Pleydell!
I am frantic to read the Last Three (Griselda, Good Red Herring, and Jethro's Mill) which are either unobtainable or incredibly priced. Any chance of a Furrowed Middlebrow edition?

    1. I have loved all the Susan Pleydell novels I have read, I think just the Greyladies reissues. I would certainly be interested in reading more if they were to become available, especially as Furrowed Middlebrow editions.
