I can still remember the boy who burned his hands on a "footlight" made in a biscuit tin! It's in a rather inaccessible place at the moment, which is a shame as I'd like to read it again.
ChristineChristinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10303024899321118197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-46439890276284139252018-07-20T12:13:59.574-07:002018-07-20T12:13:59.574-07:00Yes, there are really fun examples of that genre, ...Yes, there are really fun examples of that genre, Susan. Re the clothes, I assume you were looking at poor Miss Pirrie. She does look rather Edwardian, doesn't she? At first I thought you meant one of them was wearing a miniskirt, which WOULD have been startling!Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-85048577021879841482018-07-20T12:11:32.968-07:002018-07-20T12:11:32.968-07:00Thanks, Kim! And yes, Elizabeth is one of my favorite Courtneys too, along with Sally's Family and The Girls of Friar's Rise. But I really like all of them quite a lot. I'm only missing A Coronet for Cathie--if only Girls Gone By would get round to reprinting that one! I used to adore those old English books about families of children (all so close in age, and SO companionable) going off on a holiday with little supervision and lots of gumption and self-determination. Sans parents. Sheer escapism. Lovely!

Why is it in old (and not so old) book illustrations, old ladies always seem to be STILL wearing the clothes that were in style when they were young? Poor things.

Granted, I'm still wearing some old sweaters and t-shirts that I love. But I'm NOT wearing miniskirts (and wouldn't if I still fit into them anyway).

Susan Dhttp://www.susandaly.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-13096864815839914932018-07-13T14:29:39.716-07:002018-07-13T14:29:39.716-07:00Happy birthday!
