I think a few of my women writers were even published by them as well.Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-58249417380873334402014-09-26T06:20:38.528-07:002014-09-26T06:20:38.528-07:00Hmmm, a quick shopping trip to London sounds very ...Hmmm, a quick shopping trip to London sounds very tempting, Quinn, but I'm afraid Andy might notice if I went off to pick up a snack and didn't come back for a day and a half! It is just too tempting to have thirty or so books to choose from. But then, what if it breaks or gets lost--what would I read then?!?!?! Clearly, I have to take a couple of physical books as backup.Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-70904857128155854862014-09-26T06:14:39.980-07:002014-09-26T06:14:39.980-07:00Thank heavens I'm not going on a canoe trip--t...Thank heavens I'm not going on a canoe trip--that adds whole new concerns about what to carry. And the possibility of damaging the book is a concern I hadn't remembered. Can't carry lovely first editions even to Italy, let along on a canoe. Christie is always a good choice, and come to think of it I do have some extra copies, so I could leave them in the hotel. I suppose it's a bit like deciding which friends to take with you on a trip, except you can't lock your friends away in your suitcase or leave them in the hotel if they start to bore you... :-)Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-46886344735901938312014-09-25T09:09:33.920-07:002014-09-25T09:09:33.920-07:00Recently, I've fallen for the Oxford World Cla...Recently, I've fallen for the Oxford World Classics editions of Anthony Trollope. You've probably seen them: small, blue cloth, usually with a tiny sewn-in bookmark. And really long! I managed three days in Stockholm with just Framley Parsonage, including air-time.
So, now I save them just for travel. Or, at least I try to.

I was in Italy about 8 years ago. Only one decent bookstore in Venice, Old World Books. A decent selection in English. Everyone talks about how beautiful Libreria Acqua Alta is, but it's entirely in Italian.

Also, in Florence, there is Paperback Exchange. It is, not surprisingly, mostly paperback, but it's a pretty big selection, and it's all English. She's having a sale until the 30th Sept on new Greyladies, GGB & Fidra titles. The list is on her website, http://www.gillbilski.com/.
Don't know what postage would be, I've just emailed her my list but she has a lot of OP Greyladies & GGB titles I thought that if I'm tempted, someone else should spend money too! Weight, space and the problems if it is lost all contribute, but the need to have a book that I know will transport me to the right mood is important.

eReaders and tablets can help now. With a half dozen or so DES novels, almost all of Sayers, many Heyers, several Christies, the Lucia books and more in eBook format I can have plenty of choice.

When backpacking in Europe in my teens I started with no books, and picked up a couple in various places, small paperbacks. I read them over and over.

JerriAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-67401167006246533522014-09-24T08:18:49.408-07:002014-09-24T08:18:49.408-07:00I nearly always stress over which books I'll n...I nearly always stress over which books I'll need on my travels, and I always take more than I read, and I always seem to acquire more anyway, somehow. Most of the downish time on trips (travel time or before-bed time) is taken with journal writing, so I rarely get through more than one, if that. And of course, as you said Scott, if I were desperate, I could buy more.

Exceptions, of course, are to countries where English is a foreign language and to the wilds of Algonquin Park for a canoe trip where the concerns are not only the absence of bookstores in any language, but also the little matter of weight (it all goes on the back over the portages, and it all adds up) and the mild concern about What if it got wet and ruined? In the Park, if I get bored with my book, there's no backup plan.

This year (a few weeks ago) I solved the problem beautifully by picking up a 50-cent paperback copy of Murder on the Orient Express at a library sale the day before the trip. All problems solved. A tried and true classic, not read in years. Thin and light and expendable. I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to 1934 Europe each night before it got too dark to read. Only drawback was I gobbled it up too quickly. Next year, TWO Agatha Christies.

(By the way, my partner, Norman, took a fat paperback thriller, his favourite type of read, and lightened the load by using the already-read pages as firestarters.)Susan Dhttp://www.destevenson.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-87346511265069281542014-09-23T14:22:27.733-07:002014-09-23T14:22:27.733-07:00Your subject matter is divine and your writing sty...Your subject matter is divine and your writing style inspired. Concussed fruit flies indeed! You captured many of our hearts when you said you've begun to worry about which books to take to Italy. I'm going to my daughter's in Florida next month and last week began to worry about which books to take. We don't just "think" about which books to take. We worry.
