Not sure if editors or agents or fans or just their own desire not to have their works seem "old fashioned', but they add sex/drugs/rock and roll or whatever to the books without it being natural to them and can't quite make it jell, at least for me. It does sound like a book to avoid.

JerriAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-33981133135685720392021-05-05T12:05:48.545-07:002021-05-05T12:05:48.545-07:00Thanks for the warning, I usually love her books b...Thanks for the warning, I usually love her books but I will definitely dodge this one. I fairly recently enjoyed her children's book The Dragon of Og and was impressed that she was able to write authentic Scots dialogue, not an easy thing for an English woman to do.Katrinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18138715309807238198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-65953692252946253242021-05-04T19:04:39.850-07:002021-05-04T19:04:39.850-07:00One thing about the comment "so desperately l...One thing about the comment "so desperately lonely as to rape a young girl" -- my understanding of sexual predators (of what seems to be Angharad's type -- powerful people victimizing people under their authority) is that they don't rape because they are lonely, or because they can't find sexual partners, but because the exercise of that power is part of the attraction for them.

Possibly the book contextualizes it differently, so that her actions are the result of loneliness -- and some of what I wrote may be somewhat shallow pop psych -- but, anyway, just a thought.

Anyway, my mother returned my copy of A CANDLE FOR ST. JUDE, which I had lent to her before reading it myself, so I will get to it very soon.Rich Hortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07659613066689174738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-26121142492650934102021-05-03T10:45:51.025-07:002021-05-03T10:45:51.025-07:00I know what you mean, Diana. Luckily there are so many other great ones. I've a particular fondness for Kingfishers Catch Fire ... it was one of those books I got from the library, read, returned, then thought about so much and so often I had to buy it for myself.
