Not a light piece of fluff, I highly recommend it.

I finished listening to Death on the Cherwell, and while it wasn't "love at first listen", it was a very interesting contrast to Gaudy Night, published the same year, both set in fictional Oxford Woman's colleges.

I also read The Man With the Dark Beard by Haynes, again, not "love", but worth the .99 cents I paid for a Kindle version, and good enough that I will probably read more Haynes.

JerriAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-20057678557797428892015-10-23T20:59:05.955-07:002015-10-23T20:59:05.955-07:00Thank you Jerri, I'm making a note of that. I've read a little of Miss Read's work, but you've reminded me I need to read more.Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-24636889101259327532015-10-23T20:56:59.504-07:002015-10-23T20:56:59.504-07:00Thanks for mentioning that, Tom, I should have men...Thanks for mentioning that, Tom, I should have mentioned Anglophile Books as a good source.Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-64410692852371853702015-10-20T18:34:57.732-07:002015-10-20T18:34:57.732-07:00Another woman author who writes at least some of h...Another woman author who writes at least some of her books in a way that paints being single and focusing on one's career as a positive option, is the under rated Miss Read. The fictional Miss Read of the Fairacre series enjoys being a single teacher and loves her job. The pair of single women in the Thrush Green series come to live together, but as a partnership rather than a romance. Miss Clare was a single school teacher after her love died in war, WWI as I recall, before they could marry. There is one book. and I can't remember the title, that focuses on a single female who is the valued secretary of an important business man, although the action involves her taking care of her sister's husband and children while the sister is very ill, but it doesn't undermine the value of her single, professional life.

The books you reviewed do sound interesting.

By the way, I am just finishing listening to Death On the Cherwell by Hay, from your list, and I am enjoying it a lot.

JerriAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-25858603535486913652015-10-20T11:19:03.883-07:002015-10-20T11:19:03.883-07:00There are U.S. sources for some of their titles, a...There are U.S. sources for some of their titles, and certainly postage would we so much less. Aside from Scott's' mentioning used copies, which are, at least for me, the most fun to track down and find, I use our own Laura at Anglophile Books. But I've been pretty lucky. Some of my copies have come direct from Greyladies, but I happened across used copies of some of them as well. I now have almost a shelf-full of them, but am always on the lookout for more.Furrowed Middlebrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065110409019861653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595702824833504762.post-13832507103212245572015-10-20T02:23:09.995-07:002015-10-20T02:23:09.995-07:00The GREYLADIES books are £12 each and postage to ...The GREYLADIES books are £12 each and postage to USA is £6.50.
Have you bought their whole catalogue?

JaneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
